Open Source Everything

11 March 2009 No Comment

Previously we discussed what we’ll probably see in the future of the internet – all kinds of applications. We’ve failed though to realize that those “new applications” exist in the present day too, as in Web 1.0 (read more about it from the future of the internet article) someone – webmasters – had to create/write content.

Internet users had read-only access to the content. In today’s Web 2.0 users of the internet have gained more rights – read-write capabilities. In the future we’d have read-write-execute rights…

Executive Rights

Present day executable applications are all kinds of open-source projects as well as “social media” sites where users can provide their own content – Wikipedia, YouTube, Digg.com etc. Let’s get deeper… – how to imagine those new “executive rights” and what might be the future of open-source.

Previously we also mentioned Electric Sheep. The screensaver development is done in a grid of computers. The grid of computers works by allowing anyone to download a piece of software that adds your computer to the existing grid. The grid then uses your computer’s free computing power whenever you’re not using your computer. The Electric Sheep’s grid already has over 100′000 computers in the grid. Other notable grids are of various scientific institutions which for example need a lot of computing power to analyze enormous amounts of scientific data.

Advancing Grid To Cloud Computing

Even the idea of grid computing has been taken forward to create a higher version of the grid – cloud-computing. Cloud-computing can be imagined by applying dimensional analogy (read dimensional interpretation article). It’s not that hard… just try to imagine the grid being a 2-dimensional plane (as the name “grid” suggests) and the cloud beings as a 3-dimensional matrix (or 3d space).

Imagine open-source trading platforms, open-source translators or in the not-so-far future programming languages’ translators that’ll help you to create your own applications. Or for example, open-source games or even open-source movies. Everything that can be described with bits and bytes (or can be digitalized) can be transformed into open-source applications – giving everyone the rights to participate in advancing any software development.

Imagine the world where internet had some kind of an interface with human beings that would allow us to use those applications – translators, encyclopedias etc – in the waking life. That would demolish all kinds of communication barriers between all life forms as communication of any imaginable life form can be described with patterns.
